38th parallel

While reading about the whole Korean War, it suddenly hit me (or in fact, it=Tobias), why not focus on the 38th parallel? The line that separates the north and the south part of Korea, that still today is strictly "supervised" by each part of Korea. It's very secured with gards, mines and so on. So what I want to focuse on about the 38th parallel is why it was built, exactly what its purpose is and what it is today.
