Gennady Gerasimov

... Must have the coolest name in the world.

I suppose this will be my last blog. I'm not quite sure what to write actually. I'm hoping that I'll be able to finish my report tonight, but I seriously doubt that will be the case. During my work with this report I've come to realize that I lack discipline when it comes to studying. I sort of start, and then I start doing something else (like writing this blog for example). Luckily I get quite a lot done when I finally start working seriously.

Time to get to work, I guess.

Forgot to write my name.

So the blogg called "My last blogg I guess", is my blogg.
Thought that I should say that.

Last blogg I guess.

The assignment is going to be handed in on Monday, so this will be my last blogg.
I have written my whole report but have some minor changes left to do. This has been a hard work, as it's been really hard to write in the way that things are expected to be written. Many changes of my report have been done, but I guess I'm finally in the end of my work as I don't know what I could do more. As my report is too long, I have tried to remove a lot but it's still too long and I don't understand how we are going to be able to write this report in only 4-5 pages. In my opinion it's to little as it's a report concerning two different subjects and there are so much information to present. We have so many parts to write and each part need a little bit of space, this builds up to a long text in the end.
So I have written and then read my text and then added, changed and removed parts of the text since the last time I blogged. I have repeated this procedure over and over again, so I have done my best and one last repeat will be made before I send my final product for correction.

Writing

I have begin to write about my subject, of course I didn't start today, but a few days ago. I think it is quite hard to write about the Cuban Missile Crisis because my sources haven't been that good as I thought they would be, but I'm trying my best to do something good with it.
Now I'm going to continue writing on my report.

Divided Berlin

Hej,
i forgot to blog but i have been working around the clock to finish the essay. Now i can say that i have done all the research that i need to write the final paper. It was quite hard to connect my topic to today, but i found a very good website that helped me. I am going to discuss why the Berlin wall was built, it´s effects and the difference between East Berlin and west Berlin during the cold war. Then i will connect my topic to today.

A good page

Ok, for my connection to today I found a good page to help me. It's a debate on BBC News where they talk about my connection to today-question, so from there I can get a lot of information, and "inside-info" from those who lives in the USA.
This is the page for those of you who wants to check it out:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/talking_point/3171603.htm

Well, that's the good page I wanted to tell you about..

Lastminute-girl

Now my report is starting to get some kind of shape, but still I have a lot to do until Friday. As always I have waited to write until last minute, but the positive thing about that is that I have collected a lot of good information about my subject during this working period.

I noticed while writing that it is a really big thing writing a report, and that it takes a while to put everything together. Even the layout is taking a lot of time and energy. But I know that this is the last thing I will do this semester, so thats where I get my last enegry from.

This blogg was probably not so very informative, but I can't help it, I need all time I can get for my final report.

/EMELIE NÄSSÈN

Finally

I've gotten started with this report thing. And yes, I am indeed a lazy ass bastard who can never get started early enough to actually use my full potential. Today, I chose to write my report about the CIA's role during the Cold War, and all of the operations they carried out during the time period.

This topic gives me the chance of actually investigating whether or not the CIA was - or is - more of a political army protecting US hegemony, rather than a factual intelligence service. A great deal of discussing and interpreting the facts from the sources I'll read, that is, if I am to ever reach a conclusion.

We'll see if I'll manage. After all, there's not that much time left.

- Martin.

Struggling, but still a happy camper. :p

Yeah right.

Don't really have a lot to say. I'm, and as probably everyone else, still working on my essay. Today I'm actually very effective, maybe because I've realized that the time is running out. Civil rights movement, a bit bigger subject than I thought it would be. which probably is good too, because that means that there is a lot of sources to find on Google. Love it.

Aaah, as I said, don't have much to say, just writing my weekly blog.

/Frida Nässén

My report about Gorbachev.

I am almost finished with my report now, but there are some "headlines" that I don't really understand. For example, review of sources and summary, but I will ask what I am supposed to write under those headlines and then I am finished. I found it difficult to find facts for my "connection to today", I wanted to find out whether Gorbachev is still influencing Russian politics but no, I found almost nothing. But even though I really didn't find any good information about the connection, I think that I have succeded with my connection to today anyway. To write this report has been hard but interesting and I have learned a lot.

To write a report.

... Is quite difficult acoording to me.

The last week I have been trying to read and find something useful to my report, but I can still not find anything about how the social life was affected in East and West because of the iron curtain, and it's quite frustrating since I NEED THE INFORMATION TO MY REPORT. Help (?)

I have also begun to write my introduction (but isn't satisfied with it yet), and is done with my frontpage for the report. And, as Tobias mentioned, I felt this assignment was hard. I'm not sure I fully understands it either, but, I'll ask for an ex of an old report tomorrow and read it through a few times.

Well, the coming week I certainly need to work my ass off. So, I think it's time for bed. Auf wiedersehen.

There is nothing so desperately monotonous as writing this report

I've now written more or less everything, except for the actual report that is. I've indented my text nicely, made an elegant table of contents, written something that could be mistaken for an introduction, and color coded all my sources. So now I guess I should get to writing the "Results and Interpretations" and all that.
I have a question however, the method of research, should I write a little fairytale about how I scoured the library for good sources, or should I just write "litterature studies. Dot-end."
Also, how long was the report supposed to be? I know that you'll say "It's the quality that matters, not the quantity" and however true that may be, I would still like to know, because I remember Julia saying something about killing us for writing too much. So how long should it (all of it, minus the table of contents) be?

QUESTION

In my work about the 38th parallel, I have three main aims, though I've only got the answer to two of them. Anyway, the aims are to find out why Korea was separated, why and how the "border" still today is so strictly secured/supervised and if the Korean people want it to stay that way of if they want to unite their country again?

My question is this: Should I focuse on just one of these aims/questions or should I write about all of them?

ANSWER IS REQUIRED! :D

/ Isabelle

Report and so on

Alright!

I think I'm done writing the Results and interpretations part of my report. However, I don't know if that's where I'm supposed to write my connections to today.. in which case I'm not finished with it. Whatever.. I'm in a really bad mood since I hate this assignment.

So basically I have to start concluding and discuss my findings.. and summarize it?
But what's the differnce between a conclusion and a summary in this particular context? Oh and let's not forget that I have to critizise my sources..

Join Spin they said.. see the world they said!
I'd rather be sailing!

// Tobias Ohlsson

Hanging in there.

I am now done looking for sources and this week I have written the Results and Interpretation part and the Conclusion and Discussion part. So, now I will write my References and Bibliography and then just take it easy the rest of the weekend. Over and out!

Today

I have continued to work with the books I mentioned the last time, and yesterday (or similar) I lended a great book at Kulturmagasinet An American Dilemma. The writer's Swedish and spent over ten years in the US during the 1930's-1940's. I find the book to be very good and reliable. The writer actually met with Martin Luther King in -64 when he visited the writer's home after his peace-prize in Sthlm. I also watched the whole I Have A Dream, which Emelie S-L suggested.

Yet, I only have some boring and basic connections to today in my head. Like look at the racism and the blacks situation/living standard in the US today. I have also thought about interviewing a neighbour who has worked in some "arbetsmarknadsråd" in Washington in the beginning of the 90's. Or maybe some stastical investigation concerning the masses' view of the blacks/immigrants. The problem with that is that it's in Sweden. Thus, I need furter suggestions from Trevor or Julia. I'd also like to know if we have to stick to this type of "format" while writing, or to which extent we can vary it.

Writing!

I have started writing really much I think, I am finished with the whole results and interpretation part which feels very good. I found some good Internet pages which I could use to connect my question to today, which is how America used propaganda to justify war in Iraq. This article is one example of an article i have found useful, http://www.capitolhillblue.com/artman/publish/article_7918.shtml, this tells about America's Operation Homefront which is a very good example of American propaganda. As the soldiers were told to convince the people of America that America need to fight in Iraq. These soldiers should make interviews with local newspapers and television companies when they were home from the war. But this is only one example of American propaganda during the Iraq war. Now when I have been reading about America's propaganda both in the Vietnam war and in the Iraq war I can say that America's way to use propaganda has not changed very much, which is quite intereseting.
This is what I have done so far this week and I think it's going quite well.

Connection to today?

Damn, I'm still looking for facts about the connection to today when researching Martin Luther King. I wanted to see if his dream has been achieved in the USA; like if the standards has changed in the USA that he talked about. So if someone knows a good page, or something about this that I can use, I'm happy to get all the help I can. =)

Speech

Ok, so, I've found a good page where I can listen to and watch the famous speech by Martin Luther King, this is the page-name:

http://www.americanrhetoric.com/speeches/mlkihaveadream.htm

When watching this speech I can really understand why it's so famous, because he brings out all that he wants to say, and he says the exactley right words, the words the people want to hear. And if you too listen to and watch the speech you'll see what I mean.

Crazy claims and strange suspicions

Today I actually found a source that supported my thesis, unfortunantly it was written by a (canadian!!) high-school kid with poor English, so I'm not sure if I can call it a very reliable source. What bothers me is that it seems that me and that canadian kid are the only ones who believe the Cold War still exists. It would be nice if I could find someone with some authority on the subject who agreed with us.

Shamil basayev

I have read a lots of pages about Shamil, and I have tried to link him to the cold war as much as possible.
I have found out that he served in the soviet air force for a very long time donno when he joined it but he served the air force until 1991. I also read that when he served the soviet army he managed to build a grudge against it because of the fact that russia invaded chechnya and shamil is a chechen.

38th parallel

While reading about the whole Korean War, it suddenly hit me (or in fact, it=Tobias), why not focus on the 38th parallel? The line that separates the north and the south part of Korea, that still today is strictly "supervised" by each part of Korea. It's very secured with gards, mines and so on. So what I want to focuse on about the 38th parallel is why it was built, exactly what its purpose is and what it is today.

"Hjärnridån"

Well, here once again.

This week, I can admit, I haven't found so much useful to my assignment. I have started to read my two books from Kulturmagasinet.
- Hjärnridån by Kristian Gemer, Stefan Hedlund and Nicklas Sundström.
- Öst, väst, nord, syd - Huvuddrag i internationell politik efter 1945 by Geir Lundestad.
One includes the theories of who to blaim (revisionists etc), and the other book is more about Russias success during the Cold War and how the invisible thread was spread all over the world. I have also read about the communism vs capitalism.

I also went to both Hedbergskas library and Kulturmagasinet once again, but didn't find anymore, hopefully useful sources. So I need to search more information and facts on the internet the coming week. Though, I haven't found too much, I've been thinking and searching things to relate the Iron Curtain to today. How it affected the people socially and how it changed the boundaries between countries - and if they did. But, I might need some help to find good sources about this? I would be greatful :)

Cuban Missile Crisis

This week I have been to Kulturmagasinet to look for some good books to use, but I didn't find any. So I have continued to search on the internet for information, and the information that I'm searching for right now is how I can connect this problem to something that's happening in the world today.
One internet page that I found and that had good and useful information was "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuban_Missile_Crisis".

Hearts and Minds

Whatching the movie Hearts and Minds has been a big part of this weeks work.
Sure, this movie is all about how horrible the war were for the Vietnamese people and how wrong USA was go into Vietnam. But it also show how many people were brain-washed into believeng that America was just trying to get rid of communism. Many pilots were interviwed in this movie and they talk about how they had been trained to think that the Vietnamese people were evil communists. These pilots dropped many bombs over Vietnam but they never saw the outcome of this act, how children, mothers and fathers were killed and injured by the bombs.
You can also hear many speaches in this movie, these people justify the Vietnam War in different ways, but one common reason were that USA was the only one who could help Vietnam to get rid of the horrible rule of communism.

I have also searched for Internet pages this week, and I have at least found one who I think is quite good and can be of some help to me.
http://www.globalissues.org/HumanRights/Media/Propaganda/Vietnam.asp
This article takes up abit about how USA tried to cover up different stories about Vietnam, stories that would show USA as a bad country. If this information would reach the people of the United States it could make the American people to feel even more resentment towards the Vietnam War and the American intervention.

Sweden's neutrality.

On Monday's lesson I went to kulturmagasinet and borrowed some box that I thought would match my aim pretty good.

I my admit I haven´t been giving the books a very big chance, but I was pretty disapointed when I started to read. They contained too little facts of the type I wanted.

The titles of the books is:
Neutralitet och försvar
Sverige under Kalla Kriget
Hemlig utrikes politik

And also a very short book (only 60 pages) called
Neutralitetsmyten.

I will try to read even more during the weekend and see if I can find anything useful for my work.
I am still trying to read that scientific report here on the computer, it takes a while, so I will now continue my reading.

Since some om the members of Al-Qaida are old Afghanistan War veterans, my conntection today is pretty easy. My goal will be to found out why these people entered Al-Qaida. Gorbachev.

I talked to Trevor about how I should connect my work about Gorbachev to today. He gave me some good ideas and I am thinking of trying to find out what people think of him today, if he is still active in politics or if he just disappeared after his resignation and if that is the case, why?. Maybe teh people in Russia would rather want to have Gorbachev back instead of the years of Yeltsin or today's president Putin? I will continue my work to find out how he is seen today and I will try to find what I need to analyse this on the internet.

A change of heart AGAIN.

After talking to Trevor I decided that I should change my subject a little bit, or rather define the scope and aim a little bit. My current topic is now 'Has the Cold War Really Ended?" -Or something equally cheesy- and throughout the paper I will try to prove that what was once the cold war with its space race has now turned into a nuclear hysteria, where both parts of the left-right scale are trying to prove that they have the bigger... Missile.

Divided Berlin.

Last week, i read through the book that i got in the Library called BATTLEGROUNG BERLIN. It was helpful in a way that most internet articles aren´t. It was written by people who know alot about the cold war and according to interviews with CIA and KGB officers. It´s also from documents that have never been released to the public. It is also very detailed in that it says exactly what happened and why. However, i have gone through different pages of the book and it isn´t directly connected to my sub topic.
However, I found two websites http://berlinwall.itgo.com/exodus.htm and http://berlinwall.itgo.com/fly.html which were really helpful. These two websites clearly explain the differences between East berlin from the rest of berlin and how desperate the Easterners were to escape to the west. Some of them even put together peices of nylon cloth to be able to fly over the wall.

Reagan

Me and Trevor talked about what I am suppose to investigate, and from the quote, the question became how he succeeded with this and how does it reflect on republicans then and now?
Since Reagan was such a popular president then and gave the people so much great feeling, while Bush isn't so popular though he is a republican today.
I need to read more about his policies that could have been benefcial for his popularity.
Information: He was a great buddy to Margaret Thatcher and they hade the same policies.

Last week (18) Cuban missile crisis

Last week I just searched for useful information about my subject, and after a while I found some quite good information. According to one of my sources "http://library.thinkquest.org/11046/days/index.html", the Cuban missile crisis was the closest the world ever came to nuclear war, but thanks to the two men President John F. Kennedy and Preimer Nikita Khrushchev it never went trough completely.
This whole thing started because the Soviet Union was deperately behind the United States in the arms race, and they felt that they hade to do something do become as great as the United States. The United States had missiles that could strike the entire Soviet Union, and the Soviet Union only had missiles that were only powerful enough to be launched against Europe.
With this I just want to say that I have only searched for information this far.

Last week (18) The iron curtain.

Hola chicos!
Entschulding, I couldn't blog last week so I do it today instead (School). So, what did I do then? Well, as you probably know we didn't have any of those lessons last week, so I only started to read in the books I borrowed at Kulturis (Hjärnridån and one more I can not remember the title on). I haven't read so many new thing yet, but I have realized and also read that it was something more than just "propaganda". The iron curtain, the invisible boundary that separated Europe symbolically, ideologically and physically. And I have thought about it, we know that Soviet believed in communism during the Cold War, and the rest of the world was against it (capitalists) and I suppose that must have been one of the main reasons of this ridiculous thing to create. And as that shouldn't have been enough, it went as far to divide Germany into West and East - And the thing to separate the two pieces was a huge/tall wall.

Though, Soviet seemed to be the most "powerful" during this period of time. They had a political influence on most of the Eastern Europe (allied) and Central Europe. They influenced them with their communist rule.

I also begun to think about how to relate this to the world today, and will try to find something about how the social life in Europe was affected during this period of time. I mean, the world must have been affected by this invisible boundary and the concrete (konkreta) detail in Germany - The Berlin Wall.

And now I can honestly say that I haven't done so much more last week since we had some kind of holiday. So, better luck this week! Now I'm going to search some more facts on the internet.

"I Have A Dream"

Okay, first I was a little uncertain on what exactly I was going to focus on while working with Martin Luther King, but now, after I talked to Julia and brainstormed a little, I know;
I'm going to focus on his "I Have A Dream" speech, and see what his dream, that he spoke, of was. And why did he become so famous just for that speech? He did many other things during the campaign for equal rights, but his "I Have A Dream" was what he became mostly famous for (admit it, when you hear 'Martin Luther King' you think about the "I Have A Dream" speech, right?).

So that's what I've decided to focus on, and the connection today I'm going to research is if his dream is achieved in the USA today.

Continuation...

In 1910 Korea was colonized by Japan and during the second world war Korea was treated very bad by the Japanese people. Though, three countries: The US, China and Great Britain decided in 1943 that one of the goals with the war should be to create an independent Korea for the allied.

The Soviet Union declared war towards Japan in the mid 1945 and took parts of the Red Army fast through Manchuriet to the North part of Korea. Then the White House started to worry for Korea, it would not be good for them if the Soviet took over the whole Korea so they proposed that the country should split in half between America and Soviet. Surprisingly, Soviet did accept it, even though no american troups was in, or even close to, Korea.

In december -45 Soviet and the US discussed and signed how Korea was to be ruled, though there was no progress in the discussion. The inhabitants in Korea didn't want the country to be separated so they can easliy be seen as victims. But as Soviet and the US didn't agree on how Korea should be ruled the country stayed separated and got new rulers that was supported by the countries "ruling" them: North side (Soviet) got Kim II Sung as ruler and South (the US) got Syngman Rhee as a ruler. As we can predict the North side got introduced in a comminust/socialist economy while the South side got Capitalism.

To be continued again...

Reconstruction

I have had troubles finding a subject that interested me. Yet, I have chosen to stick with my civil rights movements (Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, Ray Charles), racial discrimination etc. in the US during this period of time.

I have found a lot of sources in the form of books in the library, I'm quite sure that the finding of sources won't be a problem within this subject. At the moment I'm using a book called An Illustrated History of the USA, where I'm writing about the first and boldest attempt to create racial justice and equality; the Reconstruction (after the assassination of Lincoln in 1856 concerning Johnson, the Southern states, the 13th and 14th amendment. The source is good, but pretty basic. I'll probably not look up another source, since my writings about the Reconstruction is more like a short description just to get a better understanding of the subject as a whole.

Any problems with anything? Tell me.

A Display of Power

My subject is still the same. I'm trying my best to link the moon landing with the nuclear testing in North Korea, but it's not going so well. I have an idea of what I want to say, but I'm not quite sure how to establish a clear link between the two. What I need is some kind of question that I can try to answer in the paper, but I don't know how to formulate it.
I'm not sure what else to write, but yeah, I need a scope and an aim.

CIA in the cold war

I have chosen to take the CIA in the cold war, as a part of the cultural cold war. there are some things that had a lot of influence on the thought of people, like the Congress for Cultural Freedom, set up by the CIA. there was also more support for certain cultural activities then there was for others (those that were ´against´ capitalism or something like that), because of the tax system.

culture was really important in the cold war, and that is something most people forget or don´t even think about when they here Cold War. there were a lot of new countries or states right after the second world war. because nationalism grew all around the world after world war II, all these states wanted to have their own identity and culture. because these countries didn´t really have their own culture yet, because they just appeared, it was really important for the USA and the USSR to get as much influence in those countries as possible.

this is what I have read/found out so far

marit dekker

Isabelle's blogging

If we see to the fact that we had no history- or social science lessons last week, I can see no point in blogging if there's nothing to write.

Anyway, here's my list of written sources that I've borrowed from Kulturmagasinet:
  • "Korea - är en återförening möjlig?" written by Lars Ove Ljungberg
  • "Korea's Place In The Sun. A Modern History" written by Bruce Cumings¨
  • "Kalla Kriget" written by Björn Kumm
  • "Orsakerna till Kalla Kriget" written by Stewart Ross

Now I'm sitting here on my history lesson and are about to read in the last book on my source list. There I hope to find something that can introduce me to the story and the facts exactly why Korea split up and why the North attacked the South side. Also I'm hoping I can read about how it affected the Cold War. I will spend this lesson on reading and this blog is to be continued...

I hope that I, after reading, will have a clear view of how it all happened and what I want to focuse on. Because right now, I feel that writing about the whole war and how it can be connected to today is too big. I need to find a specific "topic" to focus on, that I can go into depth on.

I will connect my subject, British impact on India, to today by describing how India is today with its powerful position on the world market and how the British impacts helped India or how the British rule slowed India's developing.
Since the last time I blogged I have read one of my three books and I really liked. It was very easy to read and was written in "everyday" language. Even if the book did not contain so much about just the British impacts I got a very clear picture of how India looks today and how wrong I, and most people I have asked, picture India. It was a very "personal" book but contained a lot of sources so if I will use some of the information I will look at her sources.

Martin Luther King - connection to today

My connection to today with Martin Luther King that I've been thinking about to work with is, since I'm going to focus on his 'dream' and his speech about that, to see if his dream has "come true" in the USA today, to see if he achieved what he wanted to achieve in USA with his speech.

Sweden

Here comes what you all been waiting for, the very exciting blogg of Emelie Nässén.
I've been very bad at blogging so far, so I will try to be better from this week and on.

My subject is about Sweden's neutrality, and the arms export during the cold war.
I want to know how and if Sweden was exporting weapons, and to which countries during this period. And if they did, how did they continue being neutral?

I found this very interesting scientific report written by Statsvetenskapliga instutitionen on Göterborgs university. It is about Sweden and it's neutrality during the cold war, which is perfect for my subject. If any of you are interested in reading it, here it is:
http://www.tidsanda.se/SUKK-rapport.pdf
It takes a while to go through it, but it is very good so it's worth it!

During this project, I also want to learn more about neutrality, Is it good or is it bad?

And to connect this to today, I want to find out if Sweden has the same attitude towards neutrality today. Is Sweden still neutral in war today? And is Sweden still trying to be neutral?

I also found a really good source about Sweden considering nuclear weapons.
On the site, you can read about why they wanted to have nuclear weapons, and why they didn't get it in the end.

Now I hope you got a picture of what im doing. Talk to you later!

Lyndon B Kennedy

Dear Klassisar!

Don't forget to write your names in each blogg since we cant see who wrote it otherwise!

As I've mentioned already my subject has turned a little mor to the LBJ-way of thinking. I have been reeding this book I borrowed at the library called "The kennedy obsession". It's a load of garbage and mostly revolves around myths, gossip and his wife. I't been of no use whatsoever.

As to connecting my topic to today.. Well, the american healthcare system is still in effect and America is still active in many wars. Could I perhaps look at how the american war-mentality has changed over the course of history? If anyone could give me hints about how to connect the war effort to today I'd be much obliged.

Next item on my "To do"-list has nothing with this project what so ever to do. I have my class in geography coming up this week and since I'm already failing maths B I'm going to study extra hard for the National Test on thursday.

However when the week is over and things quiets the fudge down I will finish writing my introductory pages and continue my quest to find out who really stole Trevors shoes.. and the JFK/LBJ thing..

Al-Qaida

I haven't wrote that much on my essay this week. I have mostly read a lot. I feels like I have to get a deep understanding of other things around my subject before I can continue writing. So I have read a lot about the Afghanistan war and also who the members of Al-Qaida are. How they think, what religion they have and so on... I have used the internet a lot; wikipedia for example. I think wikipedia is good when you only search for the basics. So it have helped my get a better understanding. I have also used books at home; Bonniers Stora Lexikon and Horisont. They weren't that good, but they helped my understand a little bit better..

My work with tito

As many of you others i also have some problems with my work. Ive been reeding this book i borrowed about tito. Allthough its a quite good book that has given me good information about tito jugoslavia and his connection with stalin. But i find it really hard to find something interesting to write about that i can connect with today. Ive been thinking of writing about his connection to why jugoslavia does no longer exist and if there are anything left of jugoslavia in the slavic countries Serbia, Kroatia, Slovania, Bosnia–Hercegovina, Montenegro och Makedonia. i dont know anything about this yet so i have to read further to be more specific about this . I didnt have so much time to work with this last week so im only going to blog once this week.

Connection to today

As we haven't had any lessons this week I find it quite unnecessary to blogg twice this week as I haven't have time to do so much.
But I will tell you about my connection to today and some of the things I have done at home.
I will connect my question about American propaganda during the Vietnam war to how America is using propaganda during the war against Iraq today. I find both these wars to be very much alike, with two fighting sides in a country and USA trying to be the hero solving the war and helping one side to win.
I will go on and tell about my work this week, I have watched the movie I got from Julia about propaganda during different wars, but it was unfortunatly not good information in it for me.
I have also, finally, red through the three books I got from the libary. It's only some small parts from each book I can use but I will start to search more on the Internet and read through the sources Trevor gave me. I haven't had time to look them through yet, but I will do it tomorrow during our lessons with this project.
I can't say that much good things about the sources I have found so far as it isn't anything that really strikes me as perfect information for my project, but there is much more to read.

Mikhail Gorbachev -----> Today

I have been thinking about how I will connect my work with today's Russia. I can honestly say that I have some trouble finding a good connection. I have not found anything good about it yet because I want to get a view of Gorbachev's accomplishments first and have therefore been working with that. Maybe I can connect Gorbachev's reforms to today's Russia, maybe the reforms are still going on or if they have been totally abolished. I don't really know, I would need some help with the connection. Maybe Putin is influenced by Gorbachev. I will continue my searching for a connection and read about Russia today and then see if there is a link between today and the Soviet time when Gorbachev ruled. Russia's low profile the last years might have a connection with Gorbachev's failure to reform the USSR.
I will keep searching.

JFK vs LB Johnson

Yo!

I've realized that "Analyzing what impact the kennedy-assassination had on contemporary american politics" is HUGE! I have managed to narrow it down to "investigating wheter or not the assassination played a part in LB Johnson's politics and how".

I limited the scope to the vietnam effort and the american health-care system.

If there are any problems about this from a teachers point of view I am happy to discuss this further with you.

I shall now commense writing

My work.

So far everything hasn't been so good. I don't have any internet at home right now so I haven't been able to really work with my project these last day. But I have been to Kultis Maggan again and borrowed to new books, mostly about how India is today and its role on the international market. I hope that these books can give me some information that I can use to the Social Science part in my report. Also before I lost my internet I printed out a lot of paper that had the title "British impact on India", I read it through and unfortunately it was no good at all, the papers were mostly comparing Gandhi and Ambedkar and discussing the role of the caste system and even though I learned a lot of the caste system I can't tell that I will have so much use of this source. Instead I am now going to print out and read through some other texts I have found on the internet and start reading my two books. Finally, since I didn't update the Blogg twice last week I can say that last week I also finished my introduction and wrote down my method of research (which i didn't finish since I don't know all the methods I will use, yet).

Reading...

I have started to read one book (of many books) about Mikhail Gorbachev and I think there's a lot of information about him in that book. I have found quite good information about Gorbachev in Soviet politics 1917-1991 by Mary McAuley (which is the book I'm talking about), the information is good for me beacuse it tells about Gorbachev's different ideas and what he wanted to change in the Soviet society and the way of ruling. I think that this book will give me clear view of what he thought and wanted to accomplish with his changes in ruling, and from that I might be able to analyse if his thoughts might have contributed to Soviet's fall or not. I will keep reading this book and then read some more books that I have found and try to compare them and see if they can help me in my search for the answer to my question, why did the Soviet Union fall under Mikhail Gorbachev?

Divided Berlin.

Hi,
Since the last time i blogged, i have been reading some internet articles. Most of them were not really helpful except this one. http://www.tqnyc.org/NYC051472/thetwosides.htm This site had exactly what i need to read about my topic. It expresses the feelings of Berliners towards the 96 mile barrier that was seperating them. It shows in many ways how easy life was in West Berlin compared to East Berlin. There was also another site, http://www.newseum.org/cybernewseum/exhibits/berlin_wall/two.htm which compares the different sides of Berlin based on their sides of the Berlin wall. While the Wastern side of the wall was filled with pictures of "graffiti" and expressions of peope´s feelings towards the barrier, the eastern wall was empty as people were not allowed to even come near the wall. The wall drawings also represent the two different forms of government between the two areas.
The book that i got earlier is hard to read, but i´ll keep on trying.

//Justine

Reading but nothing really good so far..

My second blogg this week, and I don't really know what to write as I haven't done so much since the last blogg I wrote.
Because I wrote the last blogg on the History lesson and then continued to read a book I got from the library, but I didn't find any information that suited my needs. Julia gave me a movie, but I haven't had time to watch it yet. On the social science lesson this friday we were doing that game theory thing so we didn't work with this project.
But I have two more books to read, one news article and one movie to see, so I hope there will be some good information for me there.

About Reagan

I borrowed a book from the library about Reagan, but it was to much before he actully became president, so a borrowed another one today. There where two books left to choose from, one that was written by a superpro-Ronald Reagan author and one he had written himself. I didn't know which source that was the best, but since I have the "objective" view from a encyclopedia, I choose to investigate some more in his biography. How good source is that?
The librarian was very helpfull, so she showed me the encyclopedia from the special year, and there it was alot about him. Maybye not so deep, but enough to understand and get a picture of who he was and his lifetime.
I also posted a thread on a forum to ask what the teens of americas view was, but they mostley complaind about my spelling and the views were very different, some thought of him as a hero and some a conspiracy maker with the devil.
Right now I would like to have some help with finding the opposite view of his politics. Or somebody that recognize his flaws and have other concpiracys then that he would co-operate with the devil.
I'm also thinking of what question I'm going to investigate, I haven't decided yet. "Han gav USA styrka igen, gav landet en identitet och fick människorna att le", could this quote form some sort of question? Perhaps how or why?
SInce I will miss the two lessons we got with the report week 18 (since I'm in France), I will use the time I get during the journey to read one side of the Ronald Reagan-story.

TOPIC

Hello!

Today, at the lesson in history, I finally decided what I want to work with in this report. I went to Kulturmagasinet to find some useful books for the topic I've chosen: Which is The Korean War.

I find it pretty interesting to read about, two different political sides vs each other. What I now want to know is WHY it broke out. When I was reading today, I read a lot about how it broke out when the US and Sovjet became "enemies" and wanted the South and North side of Korea to stay divided, but I didn't find anywhere to read about why the north side attacked the south side. Only that the capitalists saw it as an attempt to spread communistic ideas, to try out the strength of the capitalists.

Though, I borrowed around 3-4 books about the war, about what happened after and how it broke out, so I hope I will find some realistic and/or trustworthy answers there. I don't remember the names of the books, because I left them at school. But I can sign them up here tomorrow so you know a little bit more exactly what I'm reading for the moment.

The aims I also have to think about, what I will focuse on exactly and so on. Though, the linking to today is easy when Korea still is divided in North and South. This will probably develop into a very political report with streaks of history.

Hola chicos!

And yes, now it's my turn to write in this blog. I've chosen subject now, it was quiet hard but now I'm all in for.. The Iron Curtain during the Cold War. Why? Well, I searched some facts about the Berlin wall in the beginning of the week (social science), and found some interesting pages (that I unfortunately (?) lost since the internet died) where I read about the Iron Curtain, Winston Churchill and the invisible thread that separated the communist ruled East Europe from the West side. During the week I have also read about how the Soviet wanted to "avskärma" Eastern Europe from the western parts to prevent influences from their kind of ruling etc. I have also understand that the creating of the Berlin Wall was the peak in this struggle, since it really separated those two sides from each other. This was in 1961. The year after did the Iron Curtain begin to fall because of tourism, trading and cultural contacts between the East and the Western world. - But, the Berlin Wall was still there, strictly controlled by guards.

Hm, I can almost say that I've found everything at www.wikipedia.se
But, I have also been at three libraries this week. GA, Hedbergska and Kulturmagasinet, but it's not much information to fínd there. The library-women helped me today, at Kulturis, and found two books that it might be some facts about the Iron Curtain and why it appeard. So, I will start to read them and search for more fact tomorrow.

Ciao! Over and out - Emmelie Hammarstedt

Mikhail Gorbachev

I have now decided to work and write about Mikhail Gorbachev. My aim is to find out if the Soviet Union fell when he was the leader and if it fell because of him I've would like understand what caused this, if it was his politics or if the fall of the Soviet Union and communism was inevitable. I've searched for facts on the internet but I haven't really found something really good. I've been on the "Kulturmagasinet" and there I found some good books; "Gorbachev, the path to power" by Christian Schimdt-Häuer and "Många år med Gorbachev". I think that I have found good material to start with.

The Cuban Missile Crisis

I have decided to work with the cuban missile crisis, and I will focus on the importance of the crisis during the cold war. I want to know more about how big part the crisis had for the cold war and why. During this week I have been looking for sources and facts to use, but still I haven't found anything that is so extremely useful. Except for one page: http://library.thinkquest.org/11046/days/index.html, here I found some useful information.

In rich old men we trust...

I have decided to work about the religion in USSR during the cold war, to see what their attitude towards it was....
So far I have found 2-3 sources mentioning that they used propaganda to convince [force] people into atheism. One of these sources is a long article about how religion started with us worshipping the memeory [souls] of the rich and elderly when they passed away...
Who here will pray to the ghost of Bill Gates in a few years from now?

Frida's bloging. :P

This week I have decided on a subject. I will also write about John F Kennedy, but my aim will be to find out how his politics have affected the world after his death. Mostly I think I want to write about his struggle for equality among black and white people, and how his work contributed to any improvement in that area.
Or something.. :P

Propaganda - Vietnam War

Hello

So far, I have decided what to write about and started the search for sources.
My subject is propaganda during the cold war but I have limited it to one question: How USA used propaganda to justify war in Vietnam. I chose it because I wanted to really explore propaganda, or at least parts of it, during the Cold War. We have studied the Cold War for a while but I haven't learned anything about the propaganda. As this was a war of propaganda more than real fighting I thought it would be great to get this knowledge too.
After I had decided my subject I had to start finding sourcesto work with. So I started to look for pages on Internet, but I didn't find that much good information. Except for one page (http://history1900s.about.com/library/photos/blyviet29.htm) with a quite horrible propaganda poster which show what strong feelings USA used to get people into the war.
I have also been to Hedbergskas library, but I haven't had time to read all through yet, so I don't know if it is any good sources for me.

Martin Luther King

It was difficult for me to choose a topic, I wasn't so sure of what I wanted to work with and learn more about.. First I chosed to work with the campaign for equal rights in USA, but after I read a bit about that I decided to work with Martin Luther King, and found out who he was during the Cold War (and what his role in the campaign for equal rights were).

So I have decided what I want to know, and I have begun to look for sources, and these are the ones I've found now (it's not all, but with these I've started to read about Martin Luther King, and his involvement in the capaign for equal rights in USA):

Why?

My subject and aim

I have decided to work with India and the British impacts on the country, my aim is to find out if all the impacts were bad, good or both. Right now I have used two saources and that is Julia's two history books, World History and Modern World History. These books were quite good because I got to know the basic stuff, but to my report I will have to use other books with more details and depth. Maybe I have found two such books, but on the internet. They are only about the impacts so they seems to be really good, but unfortunatley "Kult Maggan" did not have them. Maybe someone of you have one of the books, it is called "The Lion and the Tiger: The rise and fall of the British Raj by Denis Judd"? Anyway, so far I have taken notes from the two books I have used and I have been searching on the internet for pages with information. On this lesson I will read through the facts that I have got and finish my notes to the first two books.

JFK!

yo..

As you all know I have chosen the topic JFK and his assassination. I have been sitting here thinking about this and what I really want to know about it. I previously came to the conclusion that I wanted to know how the assassination affected contemporary american politics and it's connections to today.

I feel highly unsertain about this topic as it seems pretty far fetched. None the less I was looking for information regarding the incident and its aftermath when I realized that if I wanted to know the ramifications to american politics, I would have to search for the name Lyndon B Johnson (Kennedy's succsessor) and not Kennedy himself.

So this is what has dawned on me!

// Tobias Ohlsson

It's a conspiracy I tell you, IT'S A CONSPIRACY!

After running into some problems with linking my subject (the moon landing, and why there's so much debate and sceptisism surrounding it) to the present, I decided that I'm going to change it a little bit.

Sometime around october last year, the North Korean government claimed to have carried out nuclear tests. As everything else surrounding North Korea, their motives aren't clear, but one could interpret it as a display of power.

The same thing applies to more or less everything during the cold war, but the space race especially. The US government spent billions of dollars (remember that this is during the 60's) on their space programs, just to put a few people on a dead rock that happens to be in orbit around our earth. Even though some people would claim that it was a noble adventure in the spirit of science, there is no doubt that their main motive was to show the USSR and the rest of the world that they had the best rocket guidance system in the world. Which of course also meant that they had the best missile guidance system in the world...

Right now I don't have any 100% relevant links for you, however, I can offer you an interview with an old nut who is convinced that the moon landing was fake and that the CIA blew up the Challenger: http://www.nardwuar.com/stream.php?url=http://serviette.ca/radio_show/nw050722.mp3

I decided to work with tito. So yesterday i went to the libary and borrowed a book about him and titoism. I havent red it yet so know if its good or not.

Al- Qaida

It was really hard for me to pick a subject. But when reading of the Afghaniztan War in 1927 I got interested in Al-Qaida. Did you know that some of the present members in Al-Qaida are veterans from the Afganistan war? and thats because of the US inference in the war. And did you know that Al- Qaida also was formed after the end of this war? I think this seems really interestion, so Al-Qaida will be my subject. I haven't searched so much yet. I have only used wikipedia so far. But I know there is a lof of information to find! ;P

changed topic

hej!!

I read a lot on the internet this evening, and finally decided which topic I will take. it will be the cultural part of the cold war. I found out that the CIA had a big role in controlling the propaganda in the USA during the Cold War, found ways of propaganda by commercials and products, for example Barbie who represented the american way of life, because she was the ultimate consumer.

I know some of us also work with propaganda during the Cold War. I will give you my links, maybey it can help some of you.

Blogg Twice a Week

Hello again Everyone,

This is a reminder that you must blogg 2x a week on this! You are to be specific as to what you have done and the information you have received. Also, feel free to send your links and ask questions to each other and to me! The idea here is to cooperate and learn from each other. Remember that your projector must be linked to the Cold War and must also somehow be connected to today! Remember these two main points throughout your work! Good Luck and ask questions if you have them!
